Serotonin Receptors

Serotonin receptors are a family of cell-surface proteins that detect the neurotransmitter serotonin, or 5-HT, and regulate communication throughout the nervous system and other tissues. Most are G protein-coupled receptors that alter intracellular second-messenger pathways, whereas the 5-HT3 receptor forms a ligand-gated ion channel; receptor subtype, location, and signaling partner determine the cellular response. In pharmacology, these differences guide the development and use of receptor agonists and antagonists for conditions including depression, migraine, nausea, and anxiety. Studying receptor distribution and signaling helps explain drug selectivity, therapeutic effects, and adverse reactions, supporting more precise treatment design.

Drugs Affecting GI Tract Motility: Serotonin Receptor Agonists

2024

Serotonin, a crucial neurotransmitter synthesized by enterochromaffin cells, plays a cardinal role in regulating gastrointestinal (GI) motility. With over 90% of the body's total serotonin in the GI tract, its influence on digestive processes is profound. Serotonin is swiftly released upon various stimuli, such as food boluses or certain drugs, triggering intrinsic sensory neurons in the myenteric plexus and extrinsic vagal and spinal sensory neurons. This leads to the activation of the...

This manuscript describes how to screen for thermostabilizing mutations, purify the human serotonin transporter, generate high affinity antibodies, and crystallize the serotonin transporter-antibody complex bound to the antidepressant drug S-citalopram. This protocol can be adapted to the study of other challenging membrane transporters, receptors, and channels.

The primary purpose of this experiment is to understand how primary sensory neurons convey information of joint movements and positions as proprioceptive information for an animal. An additional objective of this report is present the anatomy of the preparation by dissection and viewing of neurons under a dissecting microscope.

Two-photon Imaging of Microglial Processes' Attraction Toward ATP or Serotonin in Acute Brain Slices
