Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans San Francisco Bay, using large cables and towers to carry traffic across a long crossing. Its main cables hang in a curved catenary and transfer the deck’s weight through vertical suspenders into the towers and anchorages, while the stiffened roadway distributes changing loads and resists bending. In physics, the structure demonstrates tension, compression, equilibrium, load distribution, and the effects of wind and oscillation on large-scale engineering systems. Studying the bridge helps students connect mathematical models of forces and moments with practical design decisions involving strength, stability, materials, and safety.

Design Example: Strain Gauge Bridge or Wheatstone Bridge

2024

The utilization of strain gauges as transducers for converting mechanical strain into electrical signals is a common practice in various engineering applications. These strain gauges are frequently integrated into Wheatstone bridge circuits to accurately measure parameters such as force or pressure. Within this context, each element within the circuit exhibits a resistance that undergoes subtle variations when subjected to mechanical strain. The primary objective is to convert minuscule...

Application of Simplified Stent-bridging Pancreaticogastrostomy in Open Pancreaticoduodenectomy

2026

Here, we present the stent-bridging pancreaticogastrostomy (PG) technique, which uses a stent to bridge the remnant pancreas to the stomach during open pancreaticoduodenectomy. The stent-bridging PG aims to simplify the anastomosis, achieve complete diversion of pancreatic juice, and minimize manipulation of the pancreatic remnant.

Bridge rectifier

2025

The bridge rectifier is essential in electronics for efficiently converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). Comprised of four diodes configured in a bridge layout, this rectifier effectively processes both the positive and negative halves of the AC waveform, making it superior to half-wave and full-wave center-tapped rectifiers in terms of voltage regulation and output stability. Operationally, the bridge rectifier allows current flow through two of its diodes during each...
