Liquid Expansion

Liquid expansion is the increase in a liquid’s volume when its temperature rises, a thermal property that helps explain how matter responds to changes in energy. Heating increases molecular motion, causing molecules to move farther apart and occupy more space; because liquids have no fixed shape, they expand within their containers and may also exert greater pressure if confined. The extent of expansion depends on the liquid and the temperature change, with water showing unusual behavior near its freezing point. This principle supports liquid-in-glass thermometers, fluid-based measuring devices, and the design of tanks, pipelines, and other systems exposed to temperature variation.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Thermal expansion is extremely important when considering which materials will be used in systems that experience fluctuations in temperature. A high or low thermal expansion in a material may or may not be desirable, depending on the application. For instance, in a common liquid thermometer, a material with a high thermal expansion would be...

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a separation technique used instead of distillation when either: (a) the relative volatilities of the compounds to be separated are very similar; (b) one or more of the mixture components are temperature sensitive even near ambient conditions; (c) the distillation would require a very low pressure or a very high distillate/feed...

Here, we present a detailed protocol combining cryo-fixation and expansion microscopy methods (Cryo-ExM), allowing for high-resolution imaging with structural preservation adapted to various biological samples. Biological samples are frozen, embedded in a swellable polymer, denatured, expanded, and immunolabeled, enabling super-resolution imaging with standard light microscopes.

Solid-Liquid Extraction

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jay Deiner — City University of New York Extraction is a crucial step in most chemical analyses. It entails removing the analyte from its sample matrix and passing it into the phase required for spectroscopic or chromatographic identification and quantification. When the sample is a solid and the required phase for analysis is a liquid, the process is called solid-liquid extraction. A simple and broadly applicable form of solid-liquid extraction entails combining the...
