Space Vehicle Motion

Space vehicle motion is the study of how spacecraft and other vehicles move through space under the influence of forces, especially gravity and propulsion. Their trajectories result from Newton’s laws: engines produce thrust by expelling propellant, while gravitational attraction continuously changes velocity and direction, allowing vehicles to enter orbit, transfer between orbits, or escape a planetary system; in near-empty space, momentum preserves motion when thrust is absent. Physics models these dynamics with vectors, reference frames, and orbital mechanics to predict position and speed. This knowledge guides launch planning, navigation, rendezvous, landing, and mission design, improving efficiency and enabling exploration of the Solar System.

Motion in Space: Velocity and Acceleration

2026

The motion of an object in space, such as a drone flying through the air, can be described mathematically using a position vector, denoted r(t), which specifies the object's location at any given time t. Analyzing the motion of the drone involves examining how this position vector changes over time. The average velocity over a time interval is obtained by dividing the change in position by the duration of the interval. As the interval becomes infinitesimally small, this average velocity...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University One thing becomes very salient after basic exposure to the science of visual perception and sensation: what people see is a creation of the brain. As a result people may fail to see things, see things that are not there, or see things in a distorted way. To distinguish between physical reality and what people perceive, scientists use the term awareness to refer to what people perceive. To study awareness, vision scientists often...

Potential energy is the energy associated with forces that depend upon the position of an object relative to its surroundings. Gravitational potential energy, which is discussed in another video, is the energy associated that is directly proportional to the height of an object above...

Source: Andrew Duffy, PhD, Department of Physics, Boston University, Boston, MA This experiment examines at various situations involving two interacting objects. First, the experiment examines the forces that two objects apply to one another while they collide. The objects are wheeled carts that have variable masses. The purpose of this experiment is to discover when the force the first cart exerts on the other is the same magnitude as the force the second cart exerts back on the first, as well...

Simple and reproducible procedures are described for making three structurally distinct collagen assemblies from a common commercially available Type I collagen monomer. Native type, fibrous long spacing or segmental long spacing collagen can be constructed by varying the conditions to which the 300 nm long and 1.4 nm diameter monomer building block is exposed.
