Prevention Focus

Prevention focus is a motivational orientation in psychology that emphasizes safety, responsibility, and avoiding negative outcomes rather than pursuing gains. It guides self-regulation by increasing sensitivity to potential losses, threats, and unmet duties, often promoting vigilance, caution, and error avoidance. Researchers use prevention focus to study decision-making, health behavior, risk perception, and responses to persuasive messages, while comparing it with promotion focus, which prioritizes advancement and positive outcomes. Understanding this orientation helps explain why people choose protective actions, respond differently to rewards and warnings, and adapt their behavior to changing demands, risks, and social expectations.

The challenge of epilepsy research is to develop novel treatments for patients where classical therapy is inadequate. Using a new protocol—with the help of an implantable drug delivery system—we are able to control seizures in anesthetized mice by the electrophoretic delivery of GABA into the epileptic focus.

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...

Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include: • Adult screening for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes • Cancer screenings such as colonoscopies and mammograms
