Behavioral Explanation

Behavioral explanation is the process of identifying and evaluating the factors that cause, shape, or maintain behavior, a central goal of psychology. It examines how biological processes, thoughts and emotions, learning histories, environmental conditions, and social influences interact to produce observable actions. Psychologists develop explanations by comparing hypotheses with behavioral evidence gathered through observation, experiments, interviews, and standardized assessments. These explanations support applications such as understanding mental health, improving education, designing effective interventions, and predicting responses to changing situations, while recognizing that behavior often results from multiple interacting causes rather than a single factor.

Consumer Surplus: Graphical Explanation

2025

Consumer surplus helps quantify the benefits consumers derive from purchasing goods or services at a price lower than what they are willing to pay. In a market, there are numerous consumers who purchase a product. Different consumers place different values on the same product. For example, consider three shoppers buying a jar of honey. The market price of the jar is $10 per unit. Alice, who values the honey at $20, has a consumer surplus of $10. Ben, willing to pay $18, enjoys a surplus of $8.

Producer surplus is the difference between the price at which producers are willing to sell their product in the market and the price that they receive. It represents the benefit that producers receive when they sell the product at a higher price than their minimum acceptable price. The supply curve represents the minimum acceptable price for selling each quantity of the good. When all goods are sold at the same market price, the producer surplus is represented as the triangular area between the...

The cranial mesenchyme undergoes dramatic morphogenic movements that likely provides a driving force for elevation of the neural folds1,2. Here we describe a simple ex vivo explant assay to characterize the cellular behaviors of the cranial mesenchyme during neurulation. This assay has numerous applications including being amenable to pharmacological manipulations and live imaging analyses.

Analyzing Situations in Helping Behavior

Source: Julian Wills & Jay Van Bavel—New York University Social psychologists and personality psychologists both attempt to predict human behavior, but they focus on very different factors. Whereas personality psychologists focus on how personality traits, character, and individual differences affect behavior, social psychologists focus primarily on the power of social situations in shaping behavior. We often underestimate the role that social situations can play in determining behavior. We...
