Stress Related Disorders

Stress-related disorders are mental health conditions in which psychological or physiological responses to threatening, overwhelming, or traumatic experiences cause persistent distress and impair daily functioning. They can develop when stress-response systems remain activated or memories of an event continue to trigger fear, arousal, avoidance, and changes in mood or behavior. Conditions such as acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and adjustment disorder are evaluated through clinical history, symptom patterns, duration, and functional impact. Understanding these disorders supports earlier recognition, trauma-informed care, and treatments such as psychotherapy, stress-management strategies, and, when appropriate, medication.

An Introduction to Modeling Behavioral Disorders and Stress

2023

Recently, it has been discovered that behavioral conditions such as, depression, anxiety and stress-response have a neurological basis. Understanding the biological underpinnings of these conditions may help scientists in developing more effective therapies to treat these disorders. Typically, rodent models are used in this field and behavioral scientists create these models using interventions like drug administration or surgery. It is important to understand how to create and evaluate rodent...

Source: Tendler, A., et al. How to Use the H1 Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Coil for Conditions Other than Depression. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) to alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It begins by identifying reduced activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as a key factor contributing to the overactivation of the amygdala and heightened fear responses. By applying targeted...

Here we describe the detailed methodology required to conduct stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) experiments, a preclinical model of post-traumatic stress disorder, in both rats and mice. The model utilizes aspects of Pavlovian fear conditioning and freezing as an index of enhanced fear in rodents.

Modeling Social Stress

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...
