Categorical Data

Categorical data are observations assigned to distinct groups or labels rather than measured on a continuous numerical scale, making them central to summarizing populations and comparing outcomes in statistics. Categories may be nominal, with no inherent order, or ordinal, with a meaningful ranking; researchers analyze them using counts, proportions, frequency tables, and visualizations such as bar charts. Relationships between categorical variables can be evaluated with contingency tables and tests such as the chi-square test, while logistic regression models category-based outcomes using explanatory variables. These methods support analysis in surveys, clinical studies, public health, and social science, where they reveal group differences, associations, and patterns for evidence-based decisions.

How Data are Classified: Categorical Data

2023

A variable, usually notated by capital letters such as X and Y, is a characteristic or measurement that can be determined for each member of a population. Data are the actual values of variables. They may be numbers, or they may be words. Datum is a single value. Data are classified based on whether they are measurable or not. Categorical data cannot be measured; instead, it can be divided into categories. For example, if Y denotes a person's party affiliation, some examples of Y include...

Preoperational Thought III: Identities and Categorization

Piaget’s preoperational stage, spanning ages 2 to 7, involves major advances in symbolic thought, language, and mental representation. Although logical reasoning remains limited, children increasingly recognize identity and classify objects and people into meaningful categories.Identity RecognitionChildren develop the concept of identity, understanding that people and objects can retain essential characteristics despite changes in appearance. For example, a person wearing a wig remains the same...

Experience is Instrumental in Tuning a Link Between Language and Cognition: Evidence from 6- to 7- Month-Old Infants' Object Categorization

At 3-4 months, listening to human and nonhuman primate vocalizations boosts infants' cognition; by 6 months, only human vocalizations exert this cognitive advantage. We describe an exposure manipulation that reveals the powerful shaping role of experience as infants specify which sounds to link to cognition and which to tune out.

Visual analytics (VA) is a new approach of analyzing data interactively. In this video, we discuss the data overload problem brought on by high-throughput biological experiments, and propose VA as a solution to such problem. The video demonstrates analysis within and between immunological datasets using a VA tool called Tableau.
