Sampling Techniques

Sampling techniques are systematic methods for selecting a subset of individuals, observations, or measurements from a larger population so researchers can draw conclusions efficiently. In statistics, methods such as simple random, stratified, systematic, and cluster sampling use defined selection rules, while nonprobability approaches rely on accessibility or judgment; the choice affects representativeness, sampling variability, and bias. Researchers apply these techniques in surveys, experiments, quality control, and public health studies when examining an entire population is impractical. Careful sampling design, an appropriate sampling frame, and transparent reporting strengthen the validity and generalizability of statistical estimates.

Sample Preparation for Analysis: Advanced Techniques

2024

Accurate analysis of complex samples often requires advanced preparation techniques to achieve reliable and reproducible results. Samples containing inorganic or organic materials can be challenging to dissolve or decompose effectively. Standard sample preparation methods include acid digestion, fusion, dry ashing, and wet digestion. Acid digestion with strong acids is commonly used to dissolve inorganic materials that are insoluble (do not dissolve) in water. This method can be useful for...

Though a known model, the guinea pig currently represents a niche in experimental animal sciences and limited data is available on the execution of most procedures. Here we present four different approaches to non-terminal in vivo blood sampling techniques in either conscious or anaesthetized guinea pigs.

We present a noninvasive sampling approach to efficiently collect hair samples from elusive small mammals, as shown for the American pika. We demonstrate the utility of this method by extracting DNA from sampled hair and amplifying several types of molecular markers commonly used in studies of wildlife ecology and conservation.
