With malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.), Toxoplasma, and many other species of medical and veterinary importance its iconic representatives, the protistan phylum Apicomplexa has long been defined as a group composed entirely of parasites and pathogens. We present here a report of a beneficial apicomplexan: the mutualistic marine endosymbiont Nephromyces. For more than a century, the peculiar structural and developmental features of Nephromyces, and its unusual habitat, have thwarted characterization of the phylogenetic affinities of this eukaryotic microbe. Using short-subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences as key evidence, with sequence identity confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), we show that Nephromyces, originally classified as a chytrid fungus, is actually an apicomplexan. Inferences from rDNA data are further supported by the several apicomplexan-like structural features in Nephromyces, including especially the strong resemblance of Nephromyces infective stages to apicomplexan sporozoites. The striking emergence of the mutualistic Nephromyces from a quintessentially parasitic clade accentuates the promise of this organism, and the three-partner symbiosis of which it is a part, as a model for probing the factors underlying the evolution of mutualism, pathogenicity, and infectious disease.

R&uuml;ckschl&uuml;sse aus rDNA-Daten werden durch mehrere Apicomplexan-&auml;hnliche strukturellen Eigenschaften in Nephromyces, darunter vor allem die starke &Auml;hnlichkeit Nephromyces infekti&ouml;se Stadien zu Apicomplexan Sporozoites weiter unterst&uuml;tzt. Das markante entstehen die mutualistischen Nephromyces aus einer typisch parasit&auml;re Klade akzentuiert das Versprechen dieser Organismus, und die drei-Partner-Symbiose, von der es, als Modell f&uuml;r die Sondierung der Faktoren die Entwicklung der Mutualismus, Pathogenit&auml;t und Infektionskrankheiten geh&ouml;rt.

Nephromyces, &#xD574;&#xC591; &#xB3D9;&#xBB3C;&#xC5D0; &#xC720;&#xC775;&#xD55C; apicomplexan symbiont.

Con par&aacute;sitos de la malaria (Plasmodium spp.), Toxoplasma y muchas otras especies de importancia m&eacute;dica y Veterinaria sus representantes ic&oacute;nicos, Protista phylum Apicomplexa durante mucho tiempo se ha definido como un grupo compuesto enteramente de par&aacute;sitos y pat&oacute;genos. Aqu&iacute; presentamos un informe de un apicomplejo beneficioso: la mutualista endosymbiont Marina Nephromyces. Para m&aacute;s de un siglo, las particularidades estructurales y de desarrollo de Nephromyces y su h&aacute;bitat inusual, han frustrado la caracterizaci&oacute;n de las afinidades filogen&eacute;ticas de este microbio eucariota. Utilizando secuencias de ADN (SSU rDNA) ribosomales subunidad corto como pruebas clave, con identidad de secuencia confirmada por hibridaci&oacute;n fluorescente in situ (FISH), demostramos que Nephromyces, originalmente clasificado como un hongo quitridio, es realmente un apicomplejo. Inferencias de ADNr datos m&aacute;s son compatibles con las caracter&iacute;sticas estructurales de varias apicomplejo-como en Nephromyces, incluyendo especialmente el gran parecido de etapas infecciosas Nephromyces a apicomplejo esporozoitos. La sorprendente aparici&oacute;n de la Nephromyces mutualistas de un clado esencialmente parasitario acent&uacute;a la promesa de este organismo y la simbiosis de tres socios que forma parte, como un modelo para sondear los factores subyacentes a la evoluci&oacute;n del mutualismo, patogenicidad y enfermedades infecciosas.
