Biography

Mafalda Laranjo obtained a degree in Biology in 2006, a master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology in 2010, and a Ph.D. degree in 2014 at the University of Coimbra. She is currently an Investigator at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra.

Dr. Laranjo's main scientific interest is Photodynamic therapy (PDT) applied to cancer treatment. In this field, she has developed and patented new compounds and has demonstrated its selective cytotoxicity in several cancer types, both in vitro and in vivo. Also, Dr. Laranjo has been working in multidisciplinary teams focusing on oncology, dentistry, gynecology, and ophthalmology research, contributing with her know-how on primary cell cultures, cellular and molecular technique's and animal models, like mouse and rat. At the same time, she contributes to science dissemination and network formation, being actively involved in international projects in South Europe regarding cancer research.

Dr. Laranjo develops her work at Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR)/Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), where besides her research activities, she is enrolled in teaching activities of under and postgraduate studies and supervision of BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. students.
