Genes involved in post-mating processes of multiple mating organisms are known to evolve rapidly due to coevolution driven by sexual conflict among male-female interacting proteins. In the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae - a monandrous species in which sexual conflict is expected to be absent or minimal - recent data strongly suggest that proteolytic enzymes specifically expressed in the female lower reproductive tissues are involved in the processing of male products transferred to females during mating. In order to better understand the role of selective forces underlying the evolution of proteins involved in post-mating responses, we analysed a cluster of genes encoding for three serine proteases that are down-regulated after mating, two of which specifically expressed in the atrium and one in the spermatheca of A. gambiae females.

Genes implicados en postnupcial procesos de m&uacute;ltiples organismos de apareamiento se saben que evolucionan r&aacute;pidamente debido a la coevoluci&oacute;n impulsado por conflicto sexual entre hombres y mujeres de prote&iacute;nas interactuantes. En el mosquito de la malaria Anopheles gambiae - una especie de monandrous en que conflicto sexual se espera que est&eacute; ausente o m&iacute;nimo - los datos recientes sugieren fuertemente que enzimas proteol&iacute;ticas expresadas espec&iacute;ficamente en los tejidos reproductivos inferiores femeninos est&aacute;n involucradas en el procesamiento de productos masculinos transferidos a hembras durante el apareamiento. Para entender mejor el papel de fuerzas selectivas que subyace a la evoluci&oacute;n de las prote&iacute;nas implicadas en respuestas de postnupcial, analizamos un grupo de genes que codifican para tres proteasas de serina que regula despu&eacute;s de aparearse, dos de los cuales expresaron espec&iacute;ficamente en el atrio y una en la espermateca de hembras de a. gambiae.

Queste proteine sono postulate di funzionare come importanti modulatori delle risposte post-mating femminile. Per comprendere il ruolo delle forze selettive sottostanti l&#39;evoluzione di queste proteine nel a. gambiae complessi, abbiamo svolto un&#39;analisi evolutiva della divergenza di sequenza e di espressione genica su una coppia di geni paralog chiamato AgAcp34A-1 e AgAcp34A-2. Questi codificare MAG-specifiche proteine che, basato sull&#39;omologia con drosofila, hanno ipotizzato per giocare un ruolo nella vitalit&agrave; dello sperma e la funzione.

During copulation, the major Afro-tropical malaria vector Anopheles gambiae s.s. transfers male accessory gland (MAG) proteins to females as a solid mass (i.e. the "mating plug"). These proteins are postulated to function as important modulators of female post-mating responses. To understand the role of selective forces underlying the evolution of these proteins in the A. gambiae complex, we carried out an evolutionary analysis of gene sequence and expression divergence on a pair of paralog genes called AgAcp34A-1 and AgAcp34A-2. These encode MAG-specific proteins which, based on homology with Drosophila, have been hypothesized to play a role in sperm viability and function.
