Biography

Since 2001, Dr. Ottensmeyer has been developing training simulators for medical education and instrumentation for research, with the overall goal of improving patient care. He has served as Director of the Medical Device and Simulation Laboratory, of the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital since 2013. His laboratory has focused on creating physical simulators enhanced with sensing and actuation technologies and driven by software architectures that support interoperability with other systems. He is coinventor on patents for full-body trauma mannequin and eye trauma simulators. Dr. Ottensmeyer has interests in 3D printing of anatomical models for medical planning, with recent efforts on hypertrophic cardiac myopathy and conjoined twins. Instrumentation he has developed supports research, therapy and training in fields including laryngology, otology, surgical simulation and medical education. He is also involved in surgical robotic development and STEM education. He graduated summa cum laude from McMaster University (Canada) in Mechanical Engineering & Management (1994) and completed his Master's (1996) and PhD (2001) in Mechanical Engineering at M.I.T. (USA).
