Auditory-tactile Stimulation

Auditory-tactile stimulation is a multisensory approach that presents sound together with touch or vibration to examine how the nervous system combines information from different senses. By varying the timing, intensity, or location of auditory and tactile signals, researchers can test whether temporal synchrony and correspondence alter perception, attention, or behavioral responses. In behavior research, this paradigm helps characterize multisensory integration, sensory weighting, and the effects of cross-modal cues on detection, reaction time, and decision-making. It also informs accessible interface design and rehabilitation strategies that use coordinated sensory feedback to support interaction and motor control.

Objective and easy measurement of sensory processing is extremely difficult in nonverbal or vulnerable pediatric patients. We developed a new methodology to quantitatively assess infants and children's cortical processing of light touch, speech sounds, and the multisensory processing of the 2 stimuli, without requiring active subject participation or causing discomfort in vulnerable patients.

We describe a computer-controlled device for investigating the sense of touch: the Tactile Automated Passive-finger Stimulator (TAPS). We describe the components of TAPS, and show how TAPS is used to administer a two-interval forced-choice tactile grating orientation test.

Optogenetic Stimulation of the Auditory Nerve

Cochlear implants (CIs) enable hearing by direct electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. However, poor frequency and intensity resolution limits the quality of hearing with CIs. Here we describe optogenetic stimulation of the auditory nerve in mice as an alternative strategy for auditory research and developing future CIs.

This paper describes the procedures for tactile stimulation of rat pups and subsequent Golgi-Cox staining of neuronal morphology. Tactile stimulation is a positive experience that is administered in the perinatal period by stroking pups with a household duster. Golgi-cox staining is a reliable procedure permitting the visualization of entire neurons.

Testing Tactile Masking between the Forearms

Here we explore contralateral tactile masking between the forearms in which tactile detection thresholds are modulated by vibration applied to a remote site. The details of which remote sites have an effect can tell us about how the body is represented in the brain.
