Honeybee Neuroscience

Honeybee neuroscience is the study of the honeybee nervous system and how neural activity produces sensory processing, behavior, learning, and social communication. It examines how neurons convert environmental signals into electrical impulses and use neurotransmitters, receptors, and synaptic networks to regulate responses such as navigation, feeding, and memory. Biochemical approaches help link molecular pathways to brain function by analyzing neural signaling, gene expression, and the effects of chemical or environmental changes. This research clarifies the mechanisms underlying honeybee cognition and colony behavior while supporting studies of pollinator health, pesticide impacts, and fundamental principles shared across animal nervous systems.

Simultaneous extracellular long term recordings from two different brain neuropiles or two different anatomical tracts were established in honeybees. These recordings allow the investigation of temporal aspects of neuronal processing across different brain areas at the single neuron as well as at the ensemble level in a behaving animal.

Here we describe our detailed protocol for the preparation of single-cohort honeybee colonies – a useful tool for analyzing the role-associated worker physiology. We also describe detailed protocols for treating workers with juvenile hormone and ecdysone to evaluate the involvement of these hormones in the regulation of worker behavior and/or physiology.
