Non-contact Dispensing

Non-contact dispensing is a liquid-handling method that transfers droplets without a pipette tip or other dispenser touching the receiving surface, helping reduce contamination and sample carryover in biochemical workflows. A dispensing head uses a controlled pressure pulse, often generated by piezoelectric, acoustic, or thermal actuation, to eject precise droplets through an orifice and position them on a target. This approach supports nanoliter-scale reagent delivery, rapid assay miniaturization, and automated preparation of reaction mixtures, microarrays, and analytical plates. By conserving valuable samples and improving positional control, non-contact dispensing enables reproducible high-throughput experimentation in research and diagnostic development.

This protocol describes a bioprinting methodology using an automated robotic depositing system that incorporates etched topographical guidance cues with the precision deposition of a cell bearing hydrogel bioink. The printed cells are directly delivered to the etched features and are able to sense and orientate with them.

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.

Contact Angle

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces. The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a murine experimental model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). CHS is based on sensitization with reactive hapten by painting the shaved skin of the chest and abdomen, with a subsequent ear skin challenge with a diluted hapten, causing a swelling reaction that is assessed in various ways.
