Portable Charcoal Filter

A portable charcoal filter is a compact purification device that uses charcoal, often activated carbon, to remove selected chemicals and organic compounds from water or air. Its extensive network of microscopic pores provides a large surface area where molecules bind to the carbon through adsorption, while the surrounding filter structure retains suspended particles; performance depends on contact time, flow rate, and contaminant properties. In biochemistry, portable charcoal filters illustrate molecular interactions at solid surfaces and support practical sample pretreatment, field testing, and basic water-quality investigations. They can reduce odors and some dissolved pollutants, but they do not remove every contaminant or reliably eliminate all microorganisms.

2025

This video showcases the Charcoal Agar Resazurin Assay (CARA) for evaluating the activity of antimicrobial compounds against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. CARA aids in assessing the efficacy of these compounds by gauging their impact on bacterial growth and distinguishing between bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects.

The charcoal agar resazurin assay (CARA) is a semi-quantitative, medium-throughput method to assess activity of test agents against mycobacteria that are replicating, non-replicating, or both. The CARA permits rapid evaluation of time- and concentration-dependent activity and identifies parameters to pursue by colony forming unit (CFU) assays.

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

Active Filters

Active filters are electronic circuits that use operational amplifiers (op-amps), resistors, and capacitors to filter out unwanted frequency components from a signal. A first-order low-pass active filter is designed to pass signals with a frequency lower than a certain cutoff frequency and attenuate frequencies higher than that cutoff frequency. The transfer function for a first-order low-pass active filter is: Where Af is the gain at low frequencies also known as the dc gain, s is the...
