Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that breaks down organic matter without oxygen, converting wastes into biogas and nutrient-rich digestate. In a sealed reactor, microbial consortia sequentially carry out hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis; during the final stage, methanogenic archaea convert acetate and hydrogen-derived carbon compounds into methane, while controlled temperature, pH, and retention time support stable operation. In bioengineering, anaerobic digestion treats wastewater, animal manure, food waste, and other biomass while recovering renewable energy and nutrients. Process design and microbial monitoring can improve methane yields, reduce waste volumes, and support circular resource management.

2025

Begin with an anaerobic digester, a sealed, oxygen-free reactor seeded with a synthetic sludge that mimics the settled solids from wastewater. The sludge contains mesophilic anaerobic microbes, a mixed microbial community. These microbes thrive at moderate temperatures and drive the digestion of the sludge’s organic matter.Continuously mix the sludge to sustain the bacterial activity and promote digestion.Later, add bioplastics, which are biodegradable polymers, into the sludge.During incubation,...

A novel Upflow Anaerobic Solid State (UASS) reactor was used for biogas production from fibrous feedstock. Digestate from UASS reactor was hydrothermally carbonized into HTC biochar in a pressurized batch reactor. The integration of the two bioenergy concepts was applied in this study to increase overall bioenergy production.

Clostridium difficile is a pathogenic bacterium that is a strict anaerobe and causes antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD). Here, methods for isolating, culturing and maintaining C. difficile vegetative cells and spores are described. These techniques necessitate an anaerobic chamber, which requires regular maintenance to ensure proper conditions for optimal C. difficile cultivation.
