Carrier Oil Emulsion

A carrier oil emulsion is a heterogeneous mixture in which a carrier oil and an aqueous phase are combined to distribute oil-soluble substances in a more usable, stable preparation. Mechanical mixing breaks one phase into small droplets, while an emulsifier lowers interfacial tension and helps prevent droplet coalescence during storage or use. In biological techniques, carrier oil emulsions support the handling and delivery of hydrophobic compounds, biomolecules, or reagents that do not readily disperse in water. Their droplet size, composition, and stability influence dosing consistency, interaction with biological systems, and performance in laboratory protocols.

This manuscript describes a simple and high-throughput method for assembling water-soluble proteins with hydrophobic pigments that is based on water-in-oil emulsions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method in the assembly of native chlorophylls with four variants of recombinant water-soluble-chlorophyll binding proteins (WSCPs) of Brassica plants expressed in E. coli.

Encapsulation of Cancer Therapeutic Agent Dacarbazine Using Nanostructured Lipid Carrier

The most commonly used method for nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) synthesis involves oil-in-water emulsion, homogenization and solidification. This was modified here by applying high shear dispersion after solidification to achieve a NLC with desirable size, improved drug encapsulation and drug loading efficiency as a potential carrier for dacarbazine delivery.

Electron Carriers

2019

Electron carriers can be thought of as electron shuttles. These compounds can easily accept electrons (i.e., be reduced) or lose them (i.e., be oxidized). They play an essential role in energy production because cellular respiration is contingent on the flow of electrons. Over the many stages of cellular respiration, glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Electron carriers pick up electrons lost by glucose in these reactions, temporarily storing and releasing them into the electron...

Preparing an Antigen-Adjuvant Emulsion to Induce Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

2025

This video demonstrates an efficient homogenization technique to generate an antigen-adjuvant emulsion to induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in a murine model. The emulsion contains an autoantigen — myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) — in the water phase, surrounded by a continuous oil phase comprising an inactivated pathogenic bacteria. The emulsion ensures a sustained release of antigens for a prolonged immune response.
