Access Resistance

Access resistance is the electrical resistance encountered as current flows between a recording electrode and the interior of a cell, making it a critical factor in accurate electrophysiological measurements. In patch-clamp experiments, it arises mainly from the narrow pipette tip, the pipette solution, and the access pathway created after membrane breakthrough; high resistance produces voltage errors and limits rapid current recording. Measuring and compensating for access resistance helps researchers quantify membrane currents, ion-channel activity, and changes in cellular excitability more reliably. Its control is therefore essential for interpreting neuronal, cardiac, and other biological electrophysiology experiments.

Ambulatory disabilities, or mobility impairments, represent the most common subcategory, comprising 14% of the country's populace. Different mobility-assistive devices, ranging from canes to scooters, enable increased independence and improved quality of life for those suffering from mobility...

Resistivity

When a voltage is applied to a conductor, an electrical field is generated, and charges in the conductor feel the force due to the electrical field. The current density that results depends on the electrical field and the properties of the material. In some materials, including metals at a given temperature, the current density is approximately proportional to the electrical field. In these cases, the current density can be modeled as: where σ is the electrical conductivity and is represented...

When a current moves through any conductor, the conductor causes some level of difficulty for the current to flow. The measure of that difficulty is known as the resistance of the material and is represented by R. Every material has its own resistance. In the case of conductors, heat is emitted whenever a current passes through them. Resistance depends on the resistivity of the material. Resistivity is a characteristic of the material used to fabricate electrical components, whereas the...

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT Central venous access devices (CVAD), commonly known as central lines or central catheters, are large-bore intravenous (IV) catheters that are introduced into the central circulation. Typically, CVADs terminate in the superior vena cava, just outside of the right atrium of the heart, but they may also terminate in any one of the great veins (i.e., aorta, inferior vena cava, brachiocephalic...
