Biochemical Reactions

Biochemical reactions are the chemical transformations that sustain life by converting molecules, transferring energy, and building or breaking down cellular components. In biology, enzymes regulate these reactions by binding specific substrates and lowering activation energy, while cofactors, temperature, pH, and substrate concentration can influence reaction rates; cells often couple energy-releasing reactions to energy-requiring processes through molecules such as ATP. These reactions form interconnected metabolic pathways, including digestion, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and biosynthesis. Studying their mechanisms helps researchers understand cellular function, explain disease-related metabolic changes, and develop applications in biotechnology, medicine, nutrition, and drug discovery.
