Collagen Iv

Collagen IV is a network-forming structural protein that creates the flexible scaffold of basement membranes, specialized extracellular matrices supporting epithelial, endothelial, and other cells. Unlike fibrillar collagens, its alpha chains assemble through triple-helical domains and specialized N- and C-terminal regions into a sheet-like mesh that interacts with laminin, proteoglycans, and cell-surface receptors. This network provides mechanical support, regulates cell adhesion and signaling, and contributes to selective filtration in tissues such as the kidney. Studying collagen IV helps explain tissue organization, vascular and kidney function, and disorders caused by altered basement-membrane structure.

Type IV Collagen of Basal Lamina

Type IV collagen is a 400 nm long, network-forming collagen that acts as a barrier between the epithelial and endothelial cells. Type IV collagen forms the backbone of the basement membrane by scaffolding with laminin, entactin, proteoglycans, and fibronectin. Apart from rendering structural support to the basement membrane, it also helps entail signaling potentials necessary for both pathological and physiological functions. A type IV collagen molecule has six alpha chains which can exist in...

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

Traditional procedures for the isolation of soluble type 1 collagen (COL1) require about 10 days from start to finish because of lengthy buffer incubations and laborious resuspensions of fibrils. Here, we describe a means to purify COL1 from small dermal biopsies in less than 3 hr.

When compared to the previous paper protocol, implementation of a computerized glucose management system results in a substantial increase in blood glucose concentration measurements within the target range. Using a computerized glucose management system to monitor blood glucose levels, decreases in severe hypoglycemia (<40 mg/dL), clinical hypoglycemia (<70 mg/dL), and hyperglycemia (>180 mg/dL) also can be observed.
