Dendritic Morphology

Dendritic morphology is the structure and branching pattern of a neuron’s dendrites, which receive and organize signals from other cells. During neuronal development, cytoskeletal remodeling, guidance cues, and synaptic activity shape dendritic growth, branch formation, and spine distribution, determining how much input a neuron can integrate. In biology, analyzing dendritic length, branching complexity, arbor geometry, and spine density helps researchers relate neuronal structure to circuit connectivity and function. These measurements are used to study brain development, learning and memory, neurodevelopmental disorders, and cellular responses to injury or disease.

Analyzing Dendritic Morphology in Columns and Layers

2017

Here, we show how to analyze dendritic routing of Drosophila medulla neurons in columns and layers. The workflow includes a dual-view imaging technique to improve the image quality and computational tools for tracing, registering dendritic arbors to the reference column array and for analyzing the dendritic structures in 3D space.

The dendritic arborization sensory neurons of the Drosophila larval peripheral nervous system are useful models to elucidate both general and neuron class-specific mechanisms of neuron differentiation. We present a practical guide to generate and analyze dendritic arborization neuron genetic mosaics.
