Glass Bead Control

Glass bead control is an experimental control in which inert glass beads undergo the same handling as a biological sample to identify effects caused by bead exposure, mixing, or processing rather than the test condition. In a matched control, researchers maintain comparable bead quantity, incubation, agitation, and recovery steps while omitting the active biological component or treatment, then compare measurements such as cell viability, protein release, or assay signal. This approach helps distinguish mechanical disruption and procedural background from genuine biological effects. Glass bead controls strengthen studies involving cell lysis, sample preparation, microbial analysis, and other bead-based laboratory methods.

Porphyrin-Modified Beads for Use as Compensation Controls in Flow Cytometry

2023

The protocol describes how porphyrin-based compensation beads for flow cytometry are prepared by the reaction of amine-functionalized polystyrene beads with the porphyrin TCPP and the amide coupling reagent EDC. A filtration procedure is used to reduce the particulate byproducts.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

This video demonstrates two methods for preparing and placing beads, which have been coated with growth factor, on explants of the developing cerebral cortex. These beads can be used to induce spatially restricted gene expression on developing neural tissue such as forebrain explants. Methods are given for using both Affi-Gel beads and heparin acryllic beads.

Bead Sprouting Assay for Early-Stage Angiogenesis Assessment: An In Vitro Bead-Based Model to Study Endothelial Sprouting in the Presence of Pericytes

2025

This video demonstrates a modified microcarrier beads-based assay incorporating pericytes to study endothelial sprouting during the early stages of angiogenesis. The assay provides an in vitro experimental model to understand molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis and the effect of anti-angiogenetic therapeutics.
