Gold Palladium Coating

Gold palladium coating is a specimen-preparation technique that deposits a thin, conductive layer of gold and palladium onto a sample before scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In a vacuum chamber, a sputter coater uses plasma to eject atoms from a gold-palladium target, which condense uniformly on the specimen’s surface. For biological samples, coating is typically applied after fixation and dehydration to reduce surface charging, improve secondary-electron emission, and preserve fine structural detail during imaging. This method supports high-resolution visualization of cell surfaces, tissues, microorganisms, and other nonconductive specimens, although the metal layer can limit subsequent chemical analysis or obscure nanoscale features if applied too thickly.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling. The set-up of a typical Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reaction will be illustrated. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions have had a profound effect on how synthetic chemists create molecules. These reactions have enabled chemists to construct bonds in new and more efficient ways. Such reactions have found widespread...

We describe a method of synthesizing biocompatible 10-nm gold nanoparticles, functionalized by coating poly-ethylene glycol onto the surface. These particles can be used in vitro and in vivo for delivering therapeutics to nanoscale cellular and extracellular spaces that are difficult to access with conventional nanoparticle sizes.

2025

Here, we present a systematic method describing the quasi-reversible self-assembly of the amyloid beta 1-40 (Aβ1-40)-coated 20 nm gold aggregates. The nano-size-dependent quasi-reversible networking between peptides was correlated with specific amino acids or sections of the Aβ1-40 monomer.
