Ventricular Pressure Measurement

Ventricular pressure measurement is a method for quantifying the pressure generated within the heart’s ventricles, providing direct information about cardiac function and circulatory dynamics. Typically, a pressure-sensing catheter enters a ventricle, where a fluid-filled or micromanometer transducer converts mechanical force into electrical signals that produce a pressure waveform throughout the cardiac cycle. Researchers and clinicians use measurements such as systolic, diastolic, and end-diastolic pressure to assess ventricular contractility, relaxation, pressure overload, and interactions between the heart and blood vessels. In biology, this technique supports studies of cardiovascular physiology, heart disease, drug effects, and experimental models of altered cardiac function.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...
