Growth Selection

Growth selection is a biological approach that favors cells, organisms, or genetic variants able to grow under defined environmental conditions. It works by exposing a population to a selective pressure, such as nutrient availability, temperature, a chemical compound, or a genetic requirement, so that organisms with advantageous traits proliferate while others grow slowly or fail to survive. Researchers use growth selection to isolate mutants, identify functional genes, enrich microbial cultures, and study adaptation, competition, and evolution. Comparing growth rates or population changes under controlled conditions can reveal how specific traits influence fitness and inform applications in genetics, biotechnology, and antimicrobial research.

Dictyostelium discoideum is a popular model organism to study complex cellular processes such as cell migration, endocytosis, and development. The utility of the organism is dependent on the feasibility of genetic manipulation. Here, we present methods to transfect Dictyostelium discoideum cells that overcome existing limitations of culturing cells in liquid media.

Exponential Population Growth Model ExpandNOTE: In these experiments you will use computer software to simulate different types of growth models. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis might be that if we increase either R, the reproductive rate or the initial population size, NT, that this will increase the population size after 10 generations in an exponential growth model compared to unmanipulated control populations. The null hypothesis may be that populations of different R and initial...

Enhancing the Development and Growth of Infant Cerebral Palsy Rats Using Selective Spinal Manipulations

Natural Selection - Concepts

Fitness Widespread variation of phenotypes in natural populations provides the raw material for evolution, which is the change in the inherited traits of populations over successive generations. Natural selection is one of the main mechanisms of evolution and requires variable traits to be heritable and associated with differential survival and/or reproductive success. Phenotypes that correlate with greater success will have more offspring that survive to reproduce in the next generation, and...
