Interosseus Muscle

Interosseous muscles are small intrinsic muscles located between the metacarpal bones of the hand and metatarsal bones of the foot, where they support precise movement and stabilization of the digits. In the hand, dorsal interossei abduct the fingers, while palmar interossei adduct them toward the middle finger; together, they flex the metacarpophalangeal joints and help extend the interphalangeal joints through the extensor expansion. These muscles contribute to grip strength, fine motor coordination, and controlled finger positioning. Studying their anatomy and function helps explain hand biomechanics, assess peripheral nerve function, and understand impairment caused by injury or neurological disease.

2014

Dissociated atrophy of intrinsic hand muscles, termed the split hand, appears to be a specific feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Consequently, a novel neurodiagnostic test, termed the split hand index, was developed to quantify the clinical phenomenon of the split hand, which differentiated ALS from mimic disorders.

Ex Vivo Assessment of Contractility, Fatigability and Alternans in Isolated Skeletal Muscles

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.

Changes in limb muscle contractile and passive mechanical properties are important biomarkers for muscle diseases. This manuscript describes physiological assays to measure these properties in the murine extensor digitorum longus and tibialis anterior muscles.

C. elegans Muscle Area Measurements: A Standardized Method to Quantify Striated Muscle Morphology

2023

C. elegans have two types of muscles, single sarcomere and multiple sarcomere, or striated muscles. This video describes the arrangement of the striated body wall muscles, which are responsible for a worm’s locomotion and includes a sample protocol to measure muscle morphology using image analysis software.
