Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency is a nutritional disorder in which inadequate iodine intake limits the body’s ability to produce thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism, growth, and development. In the thyroid gland, iodine is incorporated into thyroglobulin to form thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3); reduced hormone production increases pituitary thyroid-stimulating hormone, which can enlarge the gland and cause goiter. The condition can impair cognitive and physical development, with pregnancy and early childhood being particularly sensitive periods, so population monitoring and iodine fortification of salt are important public-health strategies for prevention.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Fluorination and Iodination of Benzene

2023

Bromination and chlorination of aromatic rings by electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions are easily achieved, but fluorination and iodination are difficult to achieve. Fluorine is so reactive that its reaction with benzene is difficult to control, resulting in poor yields of monofluoroaromatic products. To address this, Selectfluor reagent is used as a fluorine source in which a fluorine atom is bonded to a positively charged nitrogen. Unlike fluorine, iodine is highly unreactive for...
