Nephropathy

Nephropathy is kidney damage or disease that impairs the organs’ ability to filter blood, regulate fluids, and maintain chemical balance, making it an important topic in biology and medicine. It can arise from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, toxins, or inflammation, which injure nephrons and disrupt glomerular filtration; progressive damage may cause protein leakage, tubular dysfunction, and scarring. Studying nephropathy helps researchers understand kidney physiology, identify biomarkers of renal injury, and evaluate treatments that preserve function. Its investigation also supports research into chronic disease progression, tissue repair, and strategies to prevent kidney failure.

Definition Diabetic nephropathy is a chronic kidney complication that results from prolonged hyperglycemia.Prevalence It is the most common cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) worldwide, affecting up to half of individuals with diabetes.Pathophysiology • Sustained hyperglycemia triggers multiple hemodynamic and metabolic changes in the kidney. • Early in the disease, increased renal blood flow and glomerular hyperfiltration occur due to afferent arteriolar...

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.
