Lens Avoidance

Lens avoidance is a behavioral response in which an organism changes its position or activity to avoid a nearby camera lens or optical imaging apparatus. The response may arise when the lens becomes a salient visual or physical cue, causing the subject to move away, reduce exploration, or alter normal activity during observation. In biology, measuring lens avoidance helps researchers assess how recording equipment influences animal behavior, distinguish genuine responses from experimental artifacts, and refine imaging conditions. These observations can improve behavioral assays, support more reliable laboratory and field studies, and provide insight into how organisms respond to novel objects or potential threats.

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

2025

Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the anxiety of...

We present an efficient method of studying lens accommodation by using a manual lens stretcher. The protocol mimics physiological accommodation by pulling the zonules connected around the lens capsule, thereby, stretching the lens.

Lens Transplantation in Zebrafish and its Application in the Analysis of Eye Mutants

Lens development involves interactions with other tissues. Several zebrafish eye mutants are characterized by an abnormally small lens size. Here we demonstrate a lens transplantation experiment to determine whether this phenotype is due to intrinsic causes or defective interactions with tissues that surround the lens.

Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness

2024

Avoidance learning and learned helplessness are critical concepts in understanding behavioral responses to negative stimuli. Avoidance learning occurs when an organism learns that a specific behavior can prevent an unpleasant outcome. For example, a student who receives a bad grade may start studying harder to avoid future poor grades. This behavior persists even when the negative outcome is no longer present. Avoidance learning is powerful because it maintains behavior in the absence of the...
