Liver Lobes

Liver lobes are the major anatomical divisions of the liver, an organ that supports metabolism, detoxification, bile production, and nutrient storage. In humans, the right and left lobes form the principal masses, while the caudate and quadrate lobes appear on the visceral surface; externally, ligaments and fissures define these regions, whereas portal vessels, hepatic veins, and bile ducts establish functional segments. Understanding this structural and vascular organization helps researchers interpret liver development, histology, and imaging. It also guides clinical assessment, biopsy planning, and surgical resection by allowing diseased tissue to be evaluated or removed while preserving adequate functional liver mass.

This protocol describes a laparoscopic anatomical right anterior sectionectomy utilizing the Laennec capsule concept, combined with comprehensive preoperative therapy. The approach enables precise tumor resection in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases closely associated with major vascular structures, improving surgical safety, efficacy, and long-term patient outcomes.

Perfusion decellularization is a novel technique to produce whole liver scaffolds that retains the organ's extracellular matrix composition and microarchitecture. Herein, the method of preparing whole organ scaffolds using perfusion decellularization and subsequent repopulation with hepatocytes is described. Functional and transplantable liver grafts can be generated using this technique.
