Male Gonads

Male gonads are the reproductive organs, primarily the testes, that produce sperm and secrete hormones essential for sexual development and fertility. Within seminiferous tubules, germ cells undergo spermatogenesis with support from Sertoli cells, while Leydig cells produce testosterone in response to luteinizing hormone; follicle-stimulating hormone helps regulate sperm production. The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis coordinates these activities through feedback control. Studying male gonads helps explain reproductive anatomy, puberty, endocrine regulation, and causes of infertility, while supporting research on contraception, reproductive disorders, and developmental biology.

Gonadal and Placental Hormones

The gonads, namely the testes in males and the ovaries in females, are pivotal in producing gonadal hormones that orchestrate the intricate processes of sexual development and reproduction. In males, testosterone is the primary gonadal androgen. It plays a central role in the maturation of male reproductive organs — the penis and testes. Additionally, testosterone is instrumental in the development of secondary sexual characteristics — a deep voice as well as facial and pubic hair growth — and...
