Neonatal Mouse Ovaries

Neonatal mouse ovaries are the ovaries of newborn mice, a widely used model for examining how the mammalian ovary forms and establishes its early reproductive potential. During the neonatal period, germ-cell cysts break down, oocytes associate with somatic granulosa cells, and primordial follicles assemble through coordinated cell survival, signaling, and tissue remodeling. Studying these events helps researchers investigate folliculogenesis, ovarian reserve formation, reproductive toxicity, and developmental disorders. Because this window captures rapid postnatal changes, neonatal mouse ovaries also support experiments on gene function and potential interventions affecting fertility.

This protocol describes the primary culture/co-culture of mouse ovarian tissue, using ovaries from neonatal mice and individual ovarian follicles from prepubertal mice. The culture techniques support development in a highly physiological manner, allowing investigation of the effect of extrinsic agents on the ovary, and of interactions between ovarian follicles.

Primary mouse cardiomyocyte cultures are one of the pivotal tools for the investigation of myofibrillar organization and function. The following protocol describes the isolation and culture of primary cardiomyocytes from neonatal mouse hearts. The resulting cardiomyocyte cultures may be subsequently used for a variety of biomechanical, biochemical and cell-biological assays.
