Nucleoside Diphosphate Sugars

Nucleoside diphosphate sugars are activated carbohydrate donors that support the formation and modification of glycans in living cells. They consist of a sugar linked to a nucleoside diphosphate and transfer the sugar moiety to an acceptor molecule through reactions catalyzed by glycosyltransferases, forming glycosidic bonds under controlled cellular conditions. These compounds participate in nucleotide-sugar metabolism and provide building blocks for oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, and glycoconjugates, including components of cell surfaces and extracellular structures. Studying their synthesis, recognition, and utilization helps explain carbohydrate biosynthesis, cell communication, host-pathogen interactions, and potential targets for biomedical and biotechnological research.

(2017)This video demonstrates the infection of stationary-phase mammalian cells with HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus-1), followed by replication of the viral genome using host and viral replication machinery. A synthetic nucleoside analog is incorporated into newly synthesized viral DNA to label replicating genomes, which are subsequently isolated for...

Phloem and Sugar Transport

2026

Like many living organisms, plants have tissues that specialize in specific plant functions. For example, shoots are well adapted to rapid growth, while roots are structured to acquire resources efficiently. However, sugar production is primarily restricted to the photosynthetic tissues that reside in the leaves of angiosperm plants. Sugar and other resources are transported from photosynthetic cells to other specialized tissues by a process called translocation.Within a plant, tissues that...

Antiviral Nucleoside Inhibitors

Antiviral Nucleoside InhibitorsAntiviral nucleoside inhibitors are structural analogs of natural nucleosides that interfere with viral DNA or RNA synthesis. These compounds selectively target viral polymerases due to their resemblance to host nucleosides, thereby disrupting viral genome replication.Mechanism of Acyclovir ActionAcyclovir is a guanosine analog with a three-carbon acyclic side chain. It selectively targets herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2),...
