Rotator Bottle System

A Rotator Bottle System is a laboratory cell culture apparatus that gently rotates bottles to support the growth and maintenance of cells, especially anchorage-dependent cells, across a broad inner surface. As the bottle turns, culture medium repeatedly flows over the cells, improving contact with nutrients and supporting gas exchange, while rotation speed and bottle geometry influence fluid movement and cell attachment. In biology, this system provides a practical alternative to static flask culture for expanding cells, producing biological materials, and studying cell behavior under controlled, reproducible conditions. It can also help scale experiments before researchers adopt larger bioreactor systems.

Whole embryo culture technique allows us to culture mouse and rat embryos ex vivo condition during limited periods corresponding to midgestation stages. In this video protocol, we demonstrate our standard procedures of rat whole embryo culture after E12.5 using the rotator-type bottle culture system.

Mental Rotation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...

Rotational Inertia

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Inertia is the resistance of an object to being accelerated. In linear kinematics, this concept is directly related to the mass of an object. The more massive an object, the more force is required to accelerate that object. This is seen directly in Newton's second law, which states that force is equal to mass times acceleration. For rotation,...

Kinematic Equations for Rotation

In mechanics, when one observes a rigid body in rotational motion with constant angular acceleration, it is possible to establish equations for its rotational kinematics. This process resembles how linear kinematics are dealt with in simpler motion studies. For instance, imagine a point A on a rigid body engaged in circular motion. The translational velocity of this particular point can be calculated by taking the time derivatives of the displacement equation, which essentially measures the...
