Stay Suture Method

The stay suture method is a surgical technique that uses temporary stitches to hold tissue, organ edges, or an incision in a stable position during a procedure. A suture is placed through selected tissue and secured so gentle traction maintains alignment, improves exposure, and limits unwanted movement while the main repair or manipulation is performed. In biology and biomedical research, stay sutures support procedures involving tissue dissection, wound closure, specimen handling, and experimental surgery. Their controlled placement can improve access and reproducibility, while careful tension helps reduce tissue distortion and trauma.

Q Suture Technique: A Suturing Technique to Reduce Gap Formation and Increase Tensile Strength in Tendon Repair

2025

In this video, we demonstrate suturing techniques — core suture and Q suture — to repair the foot flexor tendon in an ex vivo porcine model. Q sutures enhance the strength of the core suture in tendon repair and decrease gapping at the tendon repair site.

Sutures of the Skull

2025

The human skull is composed of several bones that come together to protect the brain and support the structures of the face. The junctions where these bones meet are called sutures. Sutures are immobile joints between adjacent bones of the skull. The narrow gap between the bones is filled with dense, fibrous connective tissue that unites the bones. The long sutures located between the skull bones are not straight but instead follow irregular, tightly twisting paths. These twisting lines tightly...

Iris Fixation via External Pentagram Suturing

2022

The present protocol describes how a 10-0 polypropylene suture crosses the anterior surface of the iris, forming a pentagram to prevent both iris and pupil from moving toward the cornea. This can be combined with subsequent keratoplasty to cure bullous keratopathy with extensive anterior synechia of the iris.

The Establishment of Calvarial Suture-Bony Composite Defects in Rats: A Standardized Model for Suture-Regenerative Therapy Investigation

2011

Surgical induction of ischemic brain damage in the rat is a widely used model for stroke research. Here we demonstrate the induction of focal cerebral ischemia by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. Visualization of the resulting infarct by histological staining and magnetic resonance imaging is also shown.
