Superficial Fascia

Superficial fascia is a layer of connective tissue located beneath the skin that supports, separates, and connects surface structures throughout the body. Its loose extracellular matrix, interspersed adipose tissue, and network of blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels allow the skin to move over deeper tissues while providing insulation, energy storage, and a pathway for fluid and cellular transport. In biology, studying superficial fascia helps explain body organization, thermoregulation, sensation, wound healing, and the spread of inflammation or injected substances. Its variable composition across regions also provides insight into tissue adaptation and interactions between the integumentary, vascular, and nervous systems.

2025

This protocol presents a step-by-step instruction for harvesting the superficial inferior epigastric artery fascia (SIEF) flap and wrapping it around the reconstructed peroneal nerve defect in rabbits. This surgical addition of vascularization to the tissue bed of nerve grafts is used to improve regeneration outcomes.

To follow the progression of an immune response over time within the same mouse, lymph nodes can be sequentially removed by surgery. Here, we describe how this technique can be performed.

Ultrasound Assessment of Flow-Mediated Dilation of the Brachial and Superficial Femoral Arteries in Rats

Non-invasive assessment of endothelial function in humans can be determined by the flow-mediated dilation technique. Although thousands of studies have used this technique, no study has performed this technique non-invasively in rats. The following article describes non-invasive measurement of flow-mediated dilation in the brachial and superficial femoral arteries of rats.

Here, we present a protocol for grade III varicocele surgical treatment that aims to rebuild the venous drainage of the spermatic cord by a spermatic vein-superficial abdominal vein shunt performed under the microscope.

The Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery Axial Flap to Study Ischemic Preconditioning Effects in a Rat Model

This protocol describes harvesting, suturing, and monitoring fasciocutaneous flaps in rats that allow for good visualization and manipulation of blood flow through the superficial inferior epigastric vessels by means of clamping and ligating the femoral vessels. This is critical for studies involving ischemic preconditioning.
