Tracer Dye

Tracer dyes are colored or fluorescent compounds used to track the movement, distribution, or retention of substances within biological systems. They work by traveling with a fluid, molecule, or cellular structure while producing a visible signal through light absorption or fluorescence that can be detected by microscopy or imaging. In biology, researchers use tracer dyes to visualize membrane integrity, follow transport through tissues or cells, map fluid pathways, and assess experimental delivery methods. Their signals can reveal rates and routes of movement, helping connect cellular structure with function in studies of physiology, development, disease, and laboratory techniques.

This manuscript describes how to create regular bedforms in a flume, visualize flow through the bedforms, and use computer simulations to simulate the hyporheic flow. The computer simulations compare well with the experimental observations. This coupled simulation and experiment is well-suited for both research and educational purposes.

FM Dyes in Vesicle Recycling

2023

FM dyes are a class of fluorescent molecules that has found important use in studying the vesicle recycling process. By virtue of a chemical structure, these molecules can insert themselves into the outer leaflet of phospholipid bilayer membranes. After membrane insertion, they are internalized into the cell via endocytosed vesicles, and released when these vesicles recycle back to the membrane. Since, these dyes fluoresce strongly in the hydrophobic environment within membranes and weakly in...

2016

In order to study brain reorganization under pathological conditions we used miniosmotic pumps for direct protein delivery into the brain circumventing the blood brain barrier. Tract tracers are then injected to study alterations in brain connectivity under the influence of the protein.
