Transgenic Plants

Transgenic plants are plants whose genomes contain one or more genes introduced from another organism, enabling researchers to study gene function or produce useful traits. Scientists typically insert a gene of interest into plant cells using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation or a gene gun, then select transformed cells and regenerate them into whole plants through tissue culture. The introduced gene may confer insect resistance, herbicide tolerance, improved nutritional value, or resistance to environmental stress. In biology, transgenic plants support research on gene expression, plant development, and genome function while contributing to crop improvement, pharmaceutical production, and sustainable agriculture.

Transgenic Plants

2021

Recombinant DNA technology called transgenesis is often used to add a foreign gene or remove a detrimental gene from an organism. Such genetically modified organisms are called transgenic organisms. The first-ever transgenic plant was a tobacco plant developed in 1983 that showed resistance against the tobacco mosaic virus. Since then, many transgenic plants have been developed and commercialized for improving the agricultural, ornamental, and horticultural value of a crop plant. Transgenic...

Using a pBIBAC-GW binary vector makes generating transgenic plants with intact single-copy insertions, an easy process. Here, a series of protocols is presented that guide the reader through the process of generating transgenic Arabidopsis plants, and testing the plants for intactness and copy number of the inserts.

Transmitting Plant Viruses Using Whiteflies

Improving our understanding of and our ability to manage many of the insect-transmitted plant viruses requires the use of the vector. Insect transmission of plant viruses is a tritrophic interaction, and as such requires the manipulation of insects, virus, and plant. Vectors must be reared in large numbers and manipulated in such a way as to insure high rates of transmission to test plants. The basics of rearing and manipulating the whitefly, Bemisa tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a vector of...
