Zebrafish Cardiac Development

Zebrafish cardiac development is the formation and maturation of the embryonic heart, a conserved biological process that provides a model for understanding vertebrate cardiovascular biology. During development, cardiac progenitor cells migrate and differentiate to form a heart tube, which then loops and undergoes chamber and valve formation through coordinated genetic signals, cell movements, and tissue remodeling. Because zebrafish embryos are small, externally developing, and optically accessible, researchers can observe heart formation in living animals and manipulate relevant genes. This model supports studies of congenital heart disease, cardiac regeneration, vascular biology, and the effects of potential drugs or environmental stressors on cardiovascular development.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular model for studying genetics and developmental biology. The transparency of these animals at early developmental stages permits the direct visualization of tissue morphogenesis at the cellular level. Furthermore, zebrafish are amenable to genetic manipulation, allowing researchers to determine the effect of gene expression on the development of a vertebrate with a high degree of genetic similarity to humans. This video provides a brief overview of...

Dying cells are extruded from epithelial tissues by concerted contraction of neighboring cells without disrupting barrier function. The optical clarity of developing zebrafish provides an excellent system to visualize extrusion in living epithelia. Here we describe methods to induce and image extrusion in the larval zebrafish epidermis at cellular resolution.

Source: Li, J., et al. Development of a Larval Zebrafish Infection Model for Clostridioides difficile. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the microgavage procedure, where an anesthetized zebrafish larva is immobilized in agarose and orally injected with a pathogenic bacterium using a tracer-guided needle. The non-invasive delivery mimics natural infection, enabling analysis of bacterial replication, toxin release, and intestinal epithelial damage.
