Direct Co-culture

Direct co-culture is a cell culture method in which two or more cell populations grow together in the same physical environment, allowing direct contact and exchange of signals. In cancer research, researchers combine tumor cells with stromal, immune, endothelial, or other relevant cells so that membrane interactions, secreted factors, and cell-to-cell signaling can influence growth, invasion, survival, and therapeutic responses. Compared with isolated cultures, this approach models aspects of the tumor microenvironment and helps reveal how neighboring cells shape cancer behavior. Direct co-culture can support studies of tumor progression, drug efficacy, treatment resistance, and mechanisms that may inform more physiologically relevant experimental models.

Directing Effect of Substituents: meta-Directing Groups

2025

Substituents on the benzene ring that direct an incoming electrophile to undergo substitution at the meta position are called meta directors. All meta directors either have a positive charge on the atom directly bonded to the ring or a partial positive charge. These groups function by withdrawing electrons from the ring through inductive and resonance effects. Consider the carbocation intermediates formed upon the addition of an electrophile on nitrobenzene at the ortho, meta, and para...

Direct and Indirect Culture Methods for Studying Biodegradable Implant Materials In Vitro

We introduce three methods of direct culture, direct exposure culture, and exposure culture for evaluating the in vitro cytocompatibility of biodegradable implant materials. These in vitro methods mimic different in vivo cell-implant interactions and can be applied to study various biodegradable materials.

Vectors in Multiple Directions

Source: Nicholas Timmons, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates how vectors add and subtract in multiple directions. The goal will be to analytically calculate the addition or subtraction of multiple vectors and then to experimentally confirm the calculations. A vector is an object with both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of a vector is simply denoted as the length,...
