Chemical Structure Elucidation

Chemical structure elucidation is the process of determining the arrangement and connectivity of atoms in an unknown compound, making it central to identifying substances and verifying chemical identity. In chemistry, researchers combine analytical data from mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and sometimes ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy or chromatography to infer molecular formula, functional groups, atom-to-atom connectivity, and three-dimensional features. Comparing spectral signals, fragmentation patterns, chemical shifts, and chromatographic behavior narrows possible structures and can confirm a proposed model. The approach supports natural-product discovery, pharmaceutical development, reaction analysis, impurity identification, and quality control, while improving confidence in the composition and properties of chemical materials.

Chemical Formulas

2020

A chemical formula presents information about the proportions of atoms constituting a particular chemical compound or molecule, mainly using symbols of elements and numbers. At times other symbols, such as dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus, and minus signs, are also used. A chemical formula can be one of three types – molecular, empirical, and structural. Molecular Formula The molecular formula represents a molecule or a chemical compound using chemical symbols (to indicate the...
