Flavonoid Quantification

Flavonoid quantification is the analytical measurement of flavonoid compounds in plant materials, foods, beverages, and biological samples, providing evidence of their concentration and chemical composition. The process typically involves solvent extraction, separation by high-performance liquid chromatography, and detection using ultraviolet-visible or mass spectrometric signals calibrated against authentic standards; spectrophotometric assays can also estimate total flavonoid content through color-forming reactions. In chemistry, these methods support quality control, phytochemical profiling, authentication of botanical products, and comparison of antioxidant-rich samples. Accurate quantification helps distinguish individual flavonoids from overall content and strengthens research on their stability, distribution, and potential biological effects.

Here, we present the aluminum chloride colorimetric method, a direct analytical technique to determine flavonoids in calendula quantitatively. This approach utilizes a straightforward chemical reaction involving treating the calendula extract with an aluminum chloride reagent, forming a colored complex. The color intensity, assessed using spectrophotometry, correlates with the flavonoid concentration.

Invertebrate Lifespan Quantification

2023

Many animals naturally stop growing upon reaching adulthood, after which they undergo aging or "senescence" until dying. The amount of time between an organism\'s birth and death is called its lifespan, which can be influenced by various biological and environmental factors. By exposing organisms to different growth conditions, scientists can better understand the factors affecting lifespan. Flies and worms are ideal organisms to perform such experiments, given their short generation time and...

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.
