Green Food Dye

Green food dye is a color additive used to impart or standardize green coloration in foods, beverages, and laboratory demonstrations, making it a practical subject in chemistry and food science. Its color arises from chromophores, molecular structures that absorb selected wavelengths of visible light while reflecting or transmitting wavelengths perceived as green; the dye’s solubility and stability can depend on its chemical composition, pH, light exposure, and temperature. Chemists use green food dyes to investigate solution preparation, light absorption, concentration, and color mixing, while manufacturers apply them to improve product appearance and maintain consistent visual quality. Studying these dyes also supports evaluation of natural and synthetic colorants.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Genetic modification of foods has been a controversial issue due to debated concerns over health and environmental safety. This experiment demonstrates technical understanding of how food DNA is genetically identified, allowing for educated decision making about the safety and potential dangers of using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food supplies. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to amplify food DNA...

FM Dyes in Vesicle Recycling

2023

FM dyes are a class of fluorescent molecules that has found important use in studying the vesicle recycling process. By virtue of a chemical structure, these molecules can insert themselves into the outer leaflet of phospholipid bilayer membranes. After membrane insertion, they are internalized into the cell via endocytosed vesicles, and released when these vesicles recycle back to the membrane. Since, these dyes fluoresce strongly in the hydrophobic environment within membranes and weakly in...
