Heterogeneous Mixture

A heterogeneous mixture is a combination of two or more substances that remain physically distinct and are not distributed uniformly throughout the sample. Its components form separate phases or regions with different compositions and properties, allowing them to be identified or separated by physical methods such as filtration, decantation, sieving, or magnetic separation. Examples include soil, oil and water, and granite, where particle size, density, solubility, or magnetism can determine how the components separate. Understanding heterogeneous mixtures helps chemists analyze materials, select purification strategies, and control processes in environmental science, geology, food production, and industrial manufacturing.

Mixtures of Acids

The pH of a solution containing an acid can be determined using its acid dissociation constant and its initial concentration. If a solution contains two different acids, then its pH can be determined using one of several methods depending upon the relative strength of the acids and their dissociation constants. A Mixture of a Strong Acid and a Weak Acid In a mixture of a strong acid and a weak acid, the strong acid dissociates completely and becomes a source of almost all the hydronium ions...

In a strong and weak acid mixture, the strong acid dissociates completely and becomes a source of almost all the hydronium ions present in the solution. In contrast, the weak acid shows...

2016

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.

Separation of Mixtures via Precipitation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ana J. García-Sáez — University of Tübingen Most samples of interest are mixtures of many different components. Sample preparation, a key step in the analytical process, removes interferences that may affect the analysis. As such, developing separation techniques is an important endeavor not just in academia, but also in industry. One way to separate mixtures is to use their solubility properties. In this short paper, we will deal with aqueous solutions. The...

Ideal Solutions or Mixtures

2026

From a molecular perspective, an ideal solution is one in which the intermolecular interactions between unlike molecules are, on average, the same as those between like molecules. This is the case for ideal gas mixtures, where the molecules are far apart and do not interact with each other. However, for condensed phases like liquids or solids, the molecules are close together and interact with each other. In an ideal solution, the molecules of different species are so similar to each other that...
