Conversion Factors

Conversion factors are ratios equal to one that transform quantities between units without changing their measured value. In chemistry, dimensional analysis applies a conversion factor by multiplying a quantity by a carefully arranged ratio so unwanted units cancel, leaving the desired unit; factors may relate metric prefixes, mass, amount of substance, volume, concentration, or molecular scale. This method supports calculations involving molar mass, Avogadro’s number, density, and stoichiometric relationships. It helps chemists interpret measurements, prepare solutions, compare experimental data, and maintain unit consistency in laboratory and industrial calculations.

Other than maintaining genome stability via DNA repair, homologous recombination plays an important role in diversifying the genome. In fact, the recombination of sequences forms the molecular basis of genomic evolution. Random and non-random permutations of genomic sequences create a library of new amalgamated sequences. These newly formed genomes can determine the fitness and survival of cells. In bacteria, homologous and non-homologous types of recombination lead to the evolution of new...

Conversion of Units

Sometimes, there is a need to convert from one unit to another one. For instance, reading a cookbook in which quantities are expressed in units of liters or ounces may require conversion of quantities to cups. Or, when looking up directions on how to get to a location, we may be interested to know how many miles we are going to walk. In this case, we would have to convert units of feet or meters to miles. The first step in the unit conversion is to list the given units and the units required...

Generation of induced pluripotent stem cells provides fascinating prospects for the derivation of autologous transplants. However, progression through a pluripotent state and laborious re-differentiation still hinders clinical translation. Here we describe the derivation of adult human fibroblasts and their direct conversion into induced neural progenitor cells and the subsequent differentiation into neural lineages.

Factors Affecting Solubility

Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Chȃtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide: This solubility equilibrium may be shifted left by the addition of either silver or iodide ions, resulting in...
