Pressure Corrections

Pressure corrections are adjustments applied to measured gas pressures to account for atmospheric pressure, water vapor, or differences between instruments and experimental conditions. In chemistry, a collected gas often contains water vapor, so the dry-gas pressure is determined by subtracting the vapor pressure of water from the total pressure; readings may also be converted when a manometer measures pressure relative to the atmosphere. These corrections ensure that pressure values used in the ideal gas law represent the gas of interest rather than environmental or measurement effects. Accurate corrections improve molar-mass determinations, gas-density calculations, reaction-yield analyses, and comparisons among experiments.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Distance Corrections

2025

To achieve precise distance measurements, especially in surveying and construction, certain corrections must be applied to account for potential sources of error like the standardization errors, temperature variations, and slope adjustments.Standardization error emerges when measurement equipment undergoes changes, such as wear, repairs, or weather impacts. To address this, surveyors compare the equipment’s readings to a standard. This process identifies any deviation that might lead to...

Power Factor Correction

The power transmission to a factory involves the transfer of apparent power, a combination of active and reactive power. The power factor measures how effectively electrical power is converted into useful work output. The ratio of the real power (KW) that does the work to the apparent power (KVA) supplied to the circuit. A poor power factor means the inductive electrical load absorbs more reactive power, causing a low lagging power factor. This results in large voltage drops across the load...

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.
