Vitamin A Enrichment

Vitamin A enrichment is the deliberate increase of vitamin A or provitamin A compounds in a food, feed, or biological material to improve its nutritional value. In chemistry, this may involve adding retinyl esters or carotenoids such as beta-carotene while controlling solubility, dispersion, oxidation, and exposure to light and heat, because these compounds can degrade during processing and storage. Enrichment supports the formulation of fortified foods and supplements and provides a basis for analyzing stability, bioavailability, and nutrient delivery.

We describe the production and characterization of nanoparticles and microparticles composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) using vitamin E-TPGS as an emulsifier. By varying formulation parameters such as the concentration of emulsifier, it is possible to produce nanoparticles with mean diameters ranging from 220 nm to 1.98 µm.

Vitamins, derived from the Latin word for life, are essential organic substances required in small quantities for optimal growth and overall well-being. Unlike other organic nutrients, vitamins don't act as sources of energy or building materials but rather facilitate these nutrients' utilization by the body. Vitamins are predominantly coenzymes, assisting enzymes in specific chemical actions, like the oxidation of glucose for energy involving B vitamins. Most vitamins are not produced in our...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...
