Aortic Outflow Obstruction

Aortic outflow obstruction is a narrowing that restricts blood leaving the left ventricle through the aortic valve and into the aorta, reducing effective systemic blood flow. The obstruction may occur at the valve, below it in the left ventricular outflow tract, or above it in the ascending aorta; increased resistance raises ventricular pressure and can cause compensatory wall thickening. In clinical practice, echocardiography assesses anatomy, blood-flow velocity, pressure gradients, and ventricular function to determine severity. Recognizing the obstruction supports diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as aortic stenosis and congenital heart disease, while guiding medical management, catheter-based treatment, or surgery when needed.

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.

Angiogenesis, the sprouting of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is associated with both natural and pathological processes. Here we demonstrate an aortic ring assay that allows angiogenic potentiators and inhibitors to be directly added to aortic rings in culture. Sprouting and neovessel outgrowth can be determined by inspecting the aortic rings over a period of 6-12 days.

Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in the mouse is a commonly used experimental model to study mechanisms underlying cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure development. Here, we describe procedures to constrict the aorta to create a reproducible degree of cardiac hypertrophy in mice.

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.

Unilateral Ureteral Obstruction Murine Model: A Surgical Procedure to Obstruct the Urinary Flow from a Kidney in Mouse Models
